Gene Therapy

Ang cool ng discussion namin kanina, it’s about BioTechnology. Yung mga Cloning etc… Pero what struck me most is this new technology na ngayon ko lang narinig, at matagal na pala tong dinidevelop, pero low profile lang siya. It’s about Gene Therapy. Ever heard of that new technology? Kasi ako hindi pa, hehehehe. I just learned this on my Professor today. Grabe ang astig! You can insert a genetic code through a vector (it’s a type of virus) then they’ll put it into your body, let that virus mutate to your cells and into your DNA to alter your genetic material in order to treat and prevent diseases such as cancer and myocardial infarctions.

There are two types of Gene Therapy pala, the somatic one (w/c I already mentioned earlier) and the gene intervention one. Gene Intervention is when the “parents” chooses on what characteristics/genetic materials they want their offsprings would be. I already slightly heard of this one, hindi ko lang alam kung ano tawag. :P

But then it still raises some ethical and moral issues in our society. For me, as long as it does “good” and it “helps” people, i’m in for it. ^^;;

    I think I first heard about Gene Therapy from MGS lol. :p Not sure though, I could have read it from some magazine or book long ago.

    our congress has been having problems with this here, research groups have been trying to push for it and conservatives are blocking it @_@ waaah~ Theyve been doing some on cancer patients though

    gene therapy sounds cool. but as always there’s the dark side to it.
    or maybe some close minded people are just sensationalizing ethics and morality. they said, it’s against the natural law. well, man always do something against the natural law.

    Gene therapy in s testing stage, however, inspite of the presence of some grey areas, we have no other option to proceed towards to extend life and happiness of an individual.I do hope ita has other potentials in the the hands of those who have money, but sincere scientists have to fight for it.

    dey and i will be having a debate later bout gene therapy.. and reading all these sites info about it.. i think, we need to have it.. med and tech combined is a GIFT for people who needs it. and it’ll help for our future.. to avoid discrimination and diseases that may run through the next generation..

    and its different from cloning.. not that much sure but gene therapy is done if the fetus is there na db? while cloning is making same exact dna.. (just correct me if im wrong.. )

    *hehe.. was that really me? =p

    actually i have nothing against this type of therapy but the thing is why do we need to put the lives of those people who will have this therapy at risk knowing that someone already died because of this therapy…..i think its better to extend the lives of those who are sick without risking their lives….its just my opinion

    yea I agree, medicine and technology is a gift for people who needs it.

    Actually there are two types of gene therapy. The somatic and the gene intervention. Somatic is when you insert a “genetic code” via a vector then you’ll wait it to mutate in your body tissues to help regenerate or replace dead/abnormal body tissues. Gene intervention is basically when you “interfere” or modify the genetic structure of a cell (eg. cell modification of ovum and sperm; this why they can choose the characteristics of their offspring). And yea cloning is different, it’s just a duplicate of your genetic structure or DNA.

    @KHAYE
    Sadly, that’s the bad side of modern science. They do it in medicines too IMO. They test it on people if it is effective or not. You really need to take risks sometimes in order to gain something. We wouldn’t know if something is effective or not unless we try it 100% on people.
